Firm fined after employee loses his arm in accident
A company has been fined after a 20-year-old man lost an arm during maintenance work on one of its machines.
Natural World Products Ltd was fined £5,000 at Newry Crown Court after pleading guilty to breaching health and safety at work laws.
The case arose following a Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland investigation into an incident at its waste composting site in Keady, Co Armagh, in June 2010.
The employee became trapped after coming into contact with an unguarded rotating conveyor drum on a screening machine.
A screening machine is essentially a large sieve which sorts various sizes of waste into separate piles.
The injuries he sustained were so severe, his left arm was amputated.
The employer, Natural World Products Ltd, pleaded guilty to the charge of failing to provide a safe system of work and failing to prevent access to machinery.
No-one from the company was available for comment yesterday.
