Firm fined for polluting river

A CO Tyrone business has been fined £1,000 after pleading guilty to polluting a waterway.

Beacom Farms Limited, of Tattynuckle Road, Cleffany, Fivemiletown, was also ordered to pay £28 court costs when the case was heard at Enniskillen Magistrates Court.

The Department of the Environment issued a statement saying that the issue came to light on December 8, 2011 when water quality inspectors, acting on behalf of the Northern Ireland Environment Agency, inspected a waterway close to a farm unit at Cleffany.

"It was observed that the stones and bed of the waterway had a thick covering of fungus," it said.

"A sample taken at the time confirmed that the discharge contained poisonous, noxious or polluting matter which was potentially harmful to fish life in the receiving waterway."
