The first phase of a flagship scheme to upgrade the A6 between Randalstown and Castledawson has been officially opened.

The £185m project to upgrade the nine miles of the North-Western Transport corridor is being delivered in two phases.

Traffic is now using the four-and-a-half mile dual carriageway between Randalstown to Toome and the second phase between Toome and Castledawson is due for completion in early 2021.

The Permanent Secretary of the Department for Infrastructure, Katrina Godfrey, said: "The construction of the dualling scheme will contribute to the economic development of the region and bring long-term benefits to road users and local communities."
