Fishermen rescued from sinking boat

Three fishermen have been rescued off the coast of Ballycastle.

Coastguards from both Larne and Red Bay were called out shortly after 8pm yesterday evening to search for a vessel at Torr Head after picking up a distress signal.

A police helicopter was also sent to search the area. The men were taken back to land after their boat began taking on water.

Paddy McLaughlin of the RNLI said: "They heard a mayday call at 8.10pm that the boat was taking on water and needed assistance.

"The call was picked up by Belfast Coastguard and they launched the lifeboats from Red Bay and Larne which were shortly joined by the PSNI helicopter," he said.

"The men were found safe soon after and taken to shore. The boat was still sinking."
