A Flybe flight was forced to return to Belfast City Airport after taking off due to a technical fault.

Emergency services were sent to the scene as a precaution after the Belfast to Birmingham flight requested to return to George Best Belfast City Airport shortly after take-off on Wednesday evening.

The plane landed safely and all passengers were able to disembark.

A spokesman for the Flybe said: "Flybe can confirm that the above flight returned safely from airborne this evening as a precautionary measure following a suspected minor technical issue with the aircraft.

"As is normal procedure, the airport placed its emergency vehicles on standby.

"The safety of its passengers and crew is the airline’s number one priority at all times and Flybe would like to sincerely apologise for the inconvenience experienced."
