Flooding forces families to flee homes

A Co Antrim woman was forced to flee her home on Thursday night after flood water seeped into her kitchen.

Lisa McAlister and Caroline Coughlan, who both live on the village's Shore Street, were ankle deep in mud and dirty water as they mopped up in the aftermath of the flooding.

The women were just two of a substantial number of residents who were forced from their homes on Thursday night when heavy flooding struck the Glens towns of Cushendall, Carnlough and Larne.

Lisa's father, Dominic, said he got a call at around 11pm on Thursday night from his panicked daughter saying rainwater was seeping through her back door.

“I raced to her house with sandbags to try to soak up some of the water which was about a foot deep,” he said.

Caroline Coughlan hurried home from Belfast yesterday after hearing the news her house had been flooded.

“Residents had tried to get into the house to put sandbags down but they didn't have a key so the summer house is now completely destroyed,” she said.
