Foiled Portadown shop robber was dressed as policeman

By Lesley Houston

A man wearing a police uniform was involved in an attempted armed robbery of a shop in Portadown yesterday.

The man, accompanied by at least one accomplice, tried to force an assistant into a store room at the shop at West Street just before 10am.

The second man was carrying what is believed to be a firearm. He jumped over the counter and wrestled with another shop worker before they made off empty-handed.

The pair, described as being in their 20s, then got into a blue Toyota Avensis car, registration JHZ 1307.

Police said there may have been a third man waiting for the others inside the Toyota.

Detective Inspector Keith Gawley said the car was later found abandoned.

"I would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have seen the car travelling between West Street and where it was found abandoned at Fairgreen car park at 11.30am to contact police at Lurgan police station on the non-emergency number 101."
