Football: Rovers make the breakthrough

ROE Rovers finally got a long awaited victory over a very mobile, well organised Sion Swifts team on Saturday in a very entertaining game.

On the half hour mark, the breakthrough came. A great ball from Chris Harbinson freed Barney Butcher on the right and his pace got him in on goal but only to shoot wide.

Fortunately for Rovers, brother Colm was on hand at the back post to steer the ball back in off the crossbar from a seeming impossible angle giving Rovers the advantage in a very even contest. The half was to end even again though as five minutes from the break, a Rovers goal kick found a Sion midfielder who returned a great slide rule pass through the centre of defence for the forward to slip the ball under the oncoming Kris Anderson.

Sion applied a lot of pressure for the first 20 minutes in their best period of the game, not allowing Rovers any possession or forward movement at all.

This spell of dominance by the away side, of course, produced chances for them to take the lead.

Firstly a good passing moving on Sion's right freed up a man who was squared a ball in front of nets but blasted over form 14 yards.

Sion also had a big shout for a penalty as Rovers captain Paul Irwin mistimed a tackle in the box catching the tricky winger.
