Former bus firm boss targeted in arson terror

A former bus company boss who took thousands of visitors on tours of Belfast has told how he saved the lives of two of his young grandchildren.

Joe Lavelle’s grandchildren were asleep in his Belfast home as a gang of arsonists set his Mercedes car alight in the driveway under their bedroom window.

“I was wakened around 2.30am by my son who heard the back window of the people-mover being smashed and a doctor who lives nearby was also quickly on the scene to alert us to the danger,” he said.

“The flames were threatening to engulf the house but I managed to get them under control and save the children.

“My son gave chase in another car and alerted the PSNI. They found the gang’s car abandoned in the Ballygomartin area — but I think the culprits were from nearer home.”

Mr Lavelle believes the same gang who took over his home in May last year and burnt out another car were also responsible for the latest attack early yesterday.

He believes someone is trying to stop him going back into the bus tour business.
