Former speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly Willie Hay has taken his seat in the House of Lords.

Lord Hay of Ballyore stepped down from the Stormont post last October due to ill health and was succeeded yesterday by Sinn Fein's Mitchel McLaughlin.

He will sit on the crossbenches despite serving as a DUP member of Derry City Council from 1981-2010 and as member for Foyle in the Assembly from 1998.

The 64-year-old was flanked by DUP supporters Lord Morrow and Lord Browne of Belmont as he took the oath of allegiance to the Queen.
