Former Provo Pearse McAuley in court over assault on his wife

By Declan Brennan

Republican Pearse McAuley has appeared in court on a further charge over the alleged false imprisonment and assault of his wife at their home last Christmas.

McAuley (50), of Canal Bank Walk, Ballyconnell, Co Cavan, was brought before Cavan District Court on a charge of assault causing serious harm to Pauline Tully.

He was previously remanded in custody on related charges, including threatening to kill or cause serious harm to Ms Tully at Keelderry, Kilnaleck, Co Cavan on Christmas Eve.

Inspector Seamus Boyle told the court that a further charge was being brought. The charge alleges that McAuley intentionally or recklessly caused serious harm to Ms Tully, contrary to section 4 of the Non-Fatal Offences against the Person Act 1997. A person convicted on this offence faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

The judge remanded the accused in continuing custody to appear on June 3 next.
