Foster to meet Sajid Javid over migrant wages
DUP leader Arlene Foster will meet Tory leadership hopeful Sajid Javid in Belfast today.
The Home Secretary is holding talks with the business community about a post-Brexit immigration policy.
The DUP believes a recommended salary threshold of £30,000 for skilled migrants coming to the UK is too high for Northern Ireland, particularly in the agri-food and hospitality sectors.
Mrs Foster said: "It will be good to welcome Sajid Javid to Northern Ireland. This will be a brilliant opportunity for him to engage with the business community."
The DUP leader said she and MEP Diane Dodds had already met with those in the business community who rely on migrant labour.
"The White Paper published by the Government could have raised serious problems for our core industries having access to the required labour.
"We have been pressing the Home Secretary to ensure the policies he takes forward are suitable to all parts of the UK.
"What works in London will not work in other regions where there are lower wages."
The Home Secretary announced his candidacy for the Tory leadership on Monday. He pledged to deliver Brexit and to "restore trust, bring unity and create new opportunities across the UK".
