Four men held over firearm incident

Police in Northern Ireland have arrested four men in connection with a firearm incident.

The men, three of whom are believed to be aged 27 and another aged 24, were detained when officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland stopped a silver Vauxhall Astra car on the Andersonstown Road in west Belfast.

Earlier, a man carrying a handgun had tried to force his way into a house at Doagh Road, Newtownabbey, Co Antrim.

The gunman approached the back of the property, banged on the door and made threats while demanding entry.

A woman who was alone in the house managed to keep the door closed and telephoned her husband.

The gunman then fled with two others in a silver Astra car.

The woman's husband arrived home as the gang were making their escape and gave chase. The windscreen of his van was deliberately smashed after the gang pulled their car in front of him on the Mossvale Road, before making their escape towards the Mossvale estate.

A spokeswoman for the PSNI said a silver Astra had been seized for forensic examination.
