Four trapped in car after A26 Ballymena smash - another woman rushed to hospital after separate crash

Four people were trapped in their car after a three-vehicle crash near Ballymena on Monday morning, while another woman was rushed to hospital following a separate incident.

Police warned motorists to exercise "extreme caution" on the A26 near Ballymena after a spate of crashes on the A26 outside the county Antrim town.

At one point there had been five crashes in the space of an hour.  Most were minor in nature.

Police advised motorists to exercise "extreme caution" on the A26 between the Dunsilly roundabout and Seven Towers roundabout due to the icy conditions.

The three-vehicle crash, which left one car on its side, happened just after 9am. Four people were were cut free from the vehicle. They were not seriously injured and did not require hospital treatment.

In the second incident, a single-vehicle crash, one woman was taken to hospital. Her injuries are not known at this stage.

One motorist posting on the Northern Ireland Area Traffic Watch reported a serious crash on the Antrim-bound section of the road.

"Avoid A26 at all costs... It is seriously slippy," they said.
