Fresh appeal to sign up new blood donors

By Donna Deeney

Blood supplies for the north west are now at a normal level thanks to a huge response from the public to a plea for donors.

The Blood Transfusion Service made a plea to people to donate blood, particularly O+ and O- in the run up to Christmas as levels were critically low because of a surge in the norovirus and flu bug.

Paul McElkerney, donor recruitment and organisation manager with the service, said the response to the appeal was ‘incredible' but it was vitally important to get new donors.

He said: “While people responded really well to our appeal this might have a knock-on effect on their availability to donate in the weeks ahead.

“What we really need is for people who have never given blood to register. This is the perfect new year resolution and I would encourage people to register straight away.”

To register, text blood to 60081 or call 0500 534 666.
