Funeral for Belfast man Joe Devine who retired to live in Cyprus

By Allan Preston

The funeral took place yesterday of a Northern Ireland man who passed away suddenly in Cyprus.

Joe Devine (68) suffered a fatal heart attack while watching football on television.

He died on October 21.

A service for the Belfast man was held at Roselawn Crematorium yesterday afternoon.

Born on the Falls Road in west Belfast, Mr Devine married his childhood sweetheart Marie at 18 and moved away to England to raise his children Tina and Ed with his wife before retiring in Cyprus four years ago.

Just weeks before he died, Mr Devine was visited by his daughter Tina, who lives in the Caribbean, after her home was devastated by Hurricane Irma.

Ahead of yesterday's funeral, Tina recalled her father as "a cheeky chappy" who looked on the bright side of life.

Mr Irvine is survived by his wife and two children.

He also leaves behind his sisters Anne, Philomena and Paula, and his brothers Gerard and Charles.

In a death notice, Mr Irvine's family said: "To know him was to love him."
