Funeral for father of bride who died at wedding party

By Adrian Rutherford

The funeral of a man who collapsed and died hours after walking his daughter down the aisle to be married will take place today.

Michael Mullin passed away after becoming ill at the wedding reception on Saturday night.

Earlier in the day the devoted father had watched his daughter Celine marry her partner Conor McElroy.

Mr Mullin, from Mullaghmore Drive in Omagh, had been dancing at the reception at Jackson's Hotel in Ballybofey, Co Donegal, when he took ill at around 10.30pm.

Hotel owner Barry Jackson said: "He was dancing with a bridesmaid when he suddenly fell and died."

It is understood a nurse was at the reception and tried to resucitate him before ambulance crews arrived.

His son Emmett said in an online tribute: "The greatest man I'll ever know, we've all lost a massive gentleman."

His daughter Carlene described him as "the main man".

Parish priest Fr Kevin McElhennon said it was a tragic case.

"I knew Michael well, he was very central to our parish community and was well liked," he told the Belfast Telegraph. "He was the sort of fella who would go out walking his dog and would talk to everyone.

"He was a character, a very sociable man.

"His faith was very important to him. He would have been at Mass in the church every day. Everyone knew him to be a great socialiser, friend and neighbour."

Mr Mullin's funeral will take place at noon today at St Mary's Church in Dunmoyle, near Ballygawley.

Fr Michael Seery, who will celebrate Requiem Mass, said: "It is a very sad and tragic case.

"It has caused a lot of shock and sadness in the community. Michael would have been well-known and he was a very popular figure."

Mr Mullin is survived by his wife Anna, daughters Sabrina, Celine, Finnuala and Carlene, and sons Michael, Damian and Emmett.
