Funeral for hurler Shane Mulholland (27) killed in horror smash

By Lesley Houston

Hundreds of mourners turned out to pay their last respects to hurler Shane Mulholland yesterday.

Mr Mulholland died following a horror crash involving another car on the Lisnaskea Road in Co Fermanagh last Friday night.

The 27-year-old lived in Derrylin and played for the county's senior hurling team and was a development coach for Cavan Gaelic Athletic Association.

Derrylin parish priest Fr Fintan McKiernan conducted yesterday's funeral Mass alongside Fr Brian D'Arcy.

The service took place at St Ninnidh's in Derrylin, led by Mr Mulholland's wife Vanessa. The couple were due to celebrate their first wedding anniversary this weekend.

The respected sportsman, who was described by friends as a "jovial gentleman", is survived by newborn baby daughter Aisling.

He was buried in the church's adjoining cemetery.

GAA president Aogan O Fearghail and Martin McAvinney, the association's Ulster president, were among mourners at the funeral of the man "who had so much to offer" his sport and community.

Fermanagh county hurling club members turned out in their team colours in a show of support to the family.
