Funeral for 'joyful' Lucy Parke takes place in Co Down

The funeral of little Lucy Parke who died on New Years Day has taken place in Co Down.

Born with Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome, the eight-year-old passed away peacefully in her Ballyward home.

The syndrome which affects one in four million people , accelerates bodily ageing by eight times. Diagnosed just after birth, the majority of sufferers do not reach their 13th birthday. No treatment has yet proven effective.

The service of thanksgiving was held in Drumlee Presbyterian Church followed by a private burial in the adjoining graveyard.

The devastated family of Lucy Parke said "they will miss her every day".

A pupil at Drumadonnell Primary School in Banbridge, Lucy had enjoyed celebrating her eighth birthday on November 10 and loved music and dancing.
