The funeral has taken place of a young west Belfast man who died following a 'one-punch assault' on a Co Down beach.

Hundreds of mourners attended the funeral of Darren O'Neill (22), which took place in Holy Trinity Church in Turf Lodge yesterday morning.

Committal took place afterwards at Roselawn Crematorium.

Mr O'Neill died following the incident at Tyrella beach, near Newcastle, on June 27.

He was taken to hospital but passed away two days later.

A car enthusiast, he had days earlier attended the Donegal International Rally.

Yesterday Mr O'Neill's friends paid tribute to him and his love of cars by escorting the funeral hearse on its journey.

Members of Mr O'Neill's family had previously taken to social media to pay tribute to him, including his sister Nikita who described him as the "happiest and most loving person to be around".

Another relative, Mick Kerr, described the heartbreaking loss of his cousin as "another life taken too soon and another family torn apart".

"To most people we were just cousins, but to me you were a teacher and the big brother that never took your eyes off me," he said.

"We know you're going to be watching over us all and helping us to get through the hard days and showing us the light to the better days."

A 21-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm in relation to the incident.

He is expected to appear in court later this month.
