By Eamon Sweeney

A funeral service has taken place for a former member of the security forces who was awarded an OBE for her services to the Armed Forces.

Born in Ballymena, Noel Murray (87) was educated at Ashleigh House in Belfast and pursued a career in banking.

She met her husband Desmond while working at the Ulster Bank head office in Waring Street, Belfast.

Mrs Murray joined the UDR in April, 1976 and quickly moved through the ranks from private. She was selected to attend training at Sandhurst and became Officer in Charge of Women, The Greenfinches, at Ballykinler Camp with the rank of Captain.

During her eight years of service she won the Wilkinson Sword, which was presented to the best officer, male or female, and she was also mentioned in dispatches. She later joined SAFFA, the Armed Forces Charity, working for over a decade helping ex-service personnel and their families.
