The funeral of the former SDLP councillor Geraldine Donnelly has taken place in St Patrick's Church in Crossmaglen, Co Armagh.

Family and friends carried the coffin of the former Slieve Gullion councillor who was described as the "beating heart" of the party in Armagh, following her sudden death.

The former SDLP leader Alasdair McDonnell attended the funeral, which took place on Wednesday.

69-year-old Mrs Donnelly, who had served as a councillor for 11 years, died suddenly while on holiday in Ibiza at the weekend.

In a post on social media, Newry SDLP said her death will leave a "huge void" within her family and the community.

"It is with a deep sense of shock and profound sadness that we learn of the death of our esteemed colleague, former councillor and dear friend Geraldine Donnelly," they wrote.

"An outstanding public representative, devoted wife, mother and grandmother Geraldine was kind, caring and considerate to everyone she met. She was someone we all truly respected and held in the highest regard.

"Her untimely passing will leave a huge void within her family and the community of south Armagh and the greater Newry area who she served with grace and integrity."

Mrs Donnelly is survived by her husband Sean, son Niall and daughters Sandra and Karen.
