Funeral held for Queen's University Vice-Chancellor Professor Patrick Johnston

The funeral has taken place for the late Professor Patrick Johnston who was Vice-Chancellor of Queen's University Belfast.

He passed away suddenly on Sunday at his holiday home in Co Donegal aged 58.

He had been a major force in overhauling cancer services in Northern Ireland, and was involved in establishing the Centre for Cancer Research and Cell Biology.

Leaders from the fields of science, politics and business have spoken of their sorrow at Professor Johnston's death calling him the man who "put Belfast on the global research map".

The funeral mass took place at St Brigid's Parish Church on Derryvolgie Avenue.

The cortege passed the Lanyon building at Queen's University so that staff and students could pay a "final and fitting tribute" en route to St Brigid's for Burial in Desertegney Cemetery, Linsford, Buncrana.
