Game of Thrones marathon is just what the Doctor ordered

By Robert Dex

Sharp-eyed Doctor Who fans will spot a plug for rival drama Game Of Thrones in the science fiction show's Christmas special.

Show supremo Steven Moffat paid tribute to the bloodthirsty fantasy epic - which is mostly filmed on location in Northern Ireland - in one of the final scenes of the episode to be screened on Christmas Day.

The programme is a worldwide smash hit credited with bringing tourists into the province to see where scenes are shot.

Viewers will see a character with a plan for a perfect day's festive viewing which includes the classic Miracle On 34th Street and a "Thrones marathon".

The makers will be pleased with the reference to their hit show, which is being broadcast from the very beginning on Sky Atlantic over December ahead of the launch of the much-anticipated new series.

Moffat admitted he nearly added a Doctor Who episode to the list, but said it would be "too self-reverential".
