Gang armed with hammer and screwdriver confront Belfast homeowner

Man injured and home ransacked

A Belfast homeowner has been injured after he was confronted by burglars at his south Belfast home.

Three masked men forced their way into the Melrose Street home just after midnight on Wednesday.

It's thought they may have hurdled a gate in an alleyway between Melrose Street and Edinburgh Street.

They were armed with a hammer and screwdriver and confronted the homeowner demanding money before ransacking rooms.

The home owner was hit in the face and back, however police said his injuries were not life-threatening.

Police are appealing for witnesses and information. Anyone with information has been asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference 29 of the 22/02/17.
