The Garda and the PSNI have joined forces to target fish poachers.

They have launched Operation Silver Fin, in conjunction with the Loughs Agency and the Partnership for Action Against Wildlife Crime, to encourage the public to report suspected fish poaching.

Officers will also enforce fishing regulations and increase awareness of the importance of protecting fish stocks.

They said the significance of wildlife crime “cannot be overstated”.

A spokesman for the gardai said: “At the most serious level it can have a direct impact on the economic, environmental and cultural lives of communities and can also negatively affect the conservation status of some native species.”

Garda Superintendent Martin Walker said: “I fully endorse the collaborative efforts of all the enforcement agencies associated with this wonderful initiative to robustly challenge the illegal activities associated with all forms of fish poaching.”

“Continued enforcement action is essential” in tackling the crime, he added.
