Gary Lineker, Clare Balding and Gabby Logan to host BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in Belfast

Gary Lineker, Gabby Logan and Clare Balding will be in Belfast to host the 2015 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards.

The event will take place at the Odyssey Arena on Sunday December 20 and will be attended by hundreds of sporting stars.

The Belfast Telegraph revealed back on April 18 that the coveted annual awards show would be hosted in Belfast this year.

But the official announcement was made on Wednesday April 29.

An 8,000-capacity audience at the city's Odyssey Arena is expected to attend the annual awards show

Stormont enterprise minister Arlene Foster said: "Northern Ireland is building a global reputation as the home of great events, which makes it only fitting that the BBC should bring its Sports Personality of the Year Awards to Belfast."

It will be the first time that Northern Ireland has hosted the event, which first went on the road in 2006.

The BBC's Director of Sport Barbara Slater said: "The city, and Northern Ireland as whole, is home to so many sporting legends and steeped in sporting history, not to mention its worldwide reputation for a welcome second to none.

"We are looking forward to a truly spectacular show."

World number one golfer from Holywood and runner-up for Sports Personality of the Year in 2014, Rory McIlroy said: "We have the facilities like the Odyssey Arena which hosted the MTV music awards. I think it will be huge.

"Belfast has been crying out for events like this, and in the years since the Millennium it has grown into a really vibrant city."
