By John Mulgrew

A loud blast reported across parts of Belfast in the early hours of Monday morning has been blamed on a gas cylinder exploding on a fire.

It's understood the explosion happened shortly after 2am in the early hours of Monday morning.

It's believed the blast was due to a gas cylinder placed on a fire on derelict site in north Belfast.

The loud bang prompted waves of concerned Belfast residents to take to social media.

Dozens of users across different parts of the city purported to have heard the explosion, with some fearing another bomb blast in the city.

A police spokesman confirmed today the blast had been caused by some form of gas cylinder exploding.

There were no reports of any injuries.
