Gas cylinder planted in car set on fire and petrol bomb thrown at house sparking Derry alert

A security alert in Londonderry was sparked after a gas cylinder was planted in a car that was set on fire and a petrol bomb thrown at a house.

One man was injured and taken to hospital after he attempted to put out the car fire. He is in hospital with injuries described as not life-threatening.

Shortly after 3.30am on Sunday morning, police received a report a car had been set on fire in the Sevenoaks area.

They arrived to find a gas cylinder had been placed in the car and what's thought was a petrol bomb thrown at a house.

Residents were evacuated from their homes and the Army bomb squad sent to the scene. The Foyle Arena was opened to accommodate those affected.

The family car was left destroyed while graffiti was daubed on the gable wall of the home.

The alert has ended and all families allowed to return to their homes.

Police are working to establish a motive and have appealed for anyone with information to contact investigating officers or the charity Crimestoppers.
