Gas leak in Northern Ireland causes traffic disruption

By Claire O'Boyle

A gas leak caused major travel disruption throughout yesterday with police officers closing off roads to allow engineers to work.

The leak in the Shore Road area of Greenisland caused the closure of the route between Station Road and the Seapark roundabout, with diversions put in place.

The PSNI asked the public to avoid the area and fire crews attended in the morning.

One commuter, travelling after 6pm, described "complete gridlock" in the Greenisland and Jordanstown areas, with tailbacks lasting more than 30 minutes on the diversion past Ulster University.

Phoenix Natural Gas said: "Engineers responded to a reported smell of gas on the A2 Shore Road this morning.

"As per safety protocol, emergency services have closed the A2 Shore Road where engineers are working to resolve the issue."

Engineers had identified the cause of the problem last night, but remedial work was ongoing.
