George Best Northern Ireland shirt could fetch £10k at auction

By Dick Barton

A Northern Ireland shirt worn by George Best in Belfast 47 years ago is set to fetch up to £10,000 at auction next month.

The long-sleeved number 11 shirt was worn by Best in the Home Nations tournament match against Scotland at Windsor Park on April 18, 1970, when he was 23.

After the match the shirt was acquired by the Northern Ireland team's coach driver.

He then gave the shirt to a boy who played for the Hillsborough junior football club.

When the shirt was auctioned at Bonhams in Chester on November 19, 2008, it sold for £2,760.

Now it is expected to fetch between £7,000 and £10,000 at Graham Budd Auctions in London on Tuesday, November 14.

Scotland won the match 1-0, with John O'Hare scoring the only goal. The Northern Ireland team included players such as Pat Jennings, Terry Neill and Derek Dougan.
