George Best themed hotel earmarked for Belfast

By Claire Williamson

Plans are in the pipeline for a George Best themed hotel in Belfast.

It comes from the same man behind the plans unveiled for a George Best hotel in Manchester.

Insider Media limited reported Signature Living is combing the Belfast Boy's former stomping ground for a suitable location and that members of the Best family are supporting the plan.

Should the plan get the go-ahead it will honour the legendary Northern Ireland footballer's achievements.

Lawrence Kenwright, founder of Signature Living has now told the BBC he is also searching for a site in Belfast.

He said: "There are several sites we are looking at in Belfast.

"It's really tough because Belfast as a city is doing very well and it's tough to land a site.

"I'm hopefully after Tuesday, we won't have signed contracts, but that we would have have picked a site."

Speaking previously about the project Mr Kenwright said he was "incredibly excited" at bringing the hotel to Manchester.

He said: "It will be a tourist destination in its own right and will add a different dimension to Manchester's burgeoning accommodation offer."

Signature Living currently operates four hotels in Liverpool. In 2015 it launched a hotel themed on the former Liverpool boss Bill Shankly in the Merseyside city.

George played 37 times for the national squad, scoring nine goals.

After a long battle with alcoholism he died in 2005, aged 59.
