The SDLP MLA for Foyle, Pat Ramsey, is to step down from the Stormont Assembly before Christmas, it has been announced.

Derry City and Strabane councillor Gerry Diver is to take his place in the New Year. He joins a number of new SDLP MLAs who have been co-opted ahead of the Stormont Assembly elections next year. The outgoing Mr Ramsey - who stood down on health grounds - was a member of Derry City Council for 18 years, serving as mayor in 1999. He was elected to the Stormont Assembly in 2003.

He said: "I have been honoured to serve the community for over three decades, so it is with a heavy heart that I announce my retirement. It has been a difficult decision but I must put my health first."
