Giants need help to get Monteith Bowl

The Belfast Giants will be backing Braehead Clan and Coventry Blaze this coming weekend in the hope that there is a final twist in the Elite League title race tale.
The Giants need both the Clan and Blaze to do them a favour if the Monteith Bowl is to make a return visit to Belfast.
Doug Christiansen’s men did all they could over the weekend, winning 12-2 against Edinburgh on Friday night before Saturday’s 9-0 hammering of Newcastle.
Josh Prudden, Brett. Hemingway (two), Brandon Benedict (two), Simon Lambert, Colin Shields, Dan Welch and Colin Hemingway all struck goals in a comfortable victory.
There were no slip-ups from the other contenders though and the Giants go into the final weekend of the season in third place.
The situation at the top of the Elite League table is that all three teams who are fighting for the title have played 52 games, with two remaining. Sheffield and Cardiff both have 83 points, while the Giants have 82.
Both the Steelers and the Devils must lose at least once in order to give the Giants a chance to snatch the crown and while Sheffield face two meetings against Braehead, with Cardiff going up against the Edinburgh Capitals in their last game they are all but guaranteed a win against a team that has lost their last 28 successive games.
“Technically we won’t be out of it if Cardiff beat Coventry on Saturday night, but I don’t see any way for Edinburgh to do us a favour on Sunday,” conceded a pragmatic Christiansen.
“I would think there will be a few fans ready to sell their allegiances this weekend in the hope that someone will help us.
“We’ll have to cheer for Coventry. There is nothing that we can do about the other games though.”
The Giants have other things in mind though, with the second leg of the Challenge Cup final against Nottingham at the Odyssey Arena tonight (Wednesday).
