Gilnahirk kids take Giant fitness strides

By Michael Bashford

Gilnahirk Primary School was visited by Colin Shields, captain of the Belfast Giants, recently, as part of the Giants’ and Tesco’s ‘Get Fit’ Programme.

The joint aim is simple, the Giants and Tesco want children to make exercise part of their normal daily routine. They have chosen to teach the basics of ice hockey because it is a relatively new game to this country and something that everyone can try out and have fun learning.

Commenting on the initiative, Colin said: “An active lifestyle is so important for kids these days.

“Tesco have made this programme possible with their generous support and this season we hope to visit over 40 schools as part of the Get Fit Initiative.”

By the year 2010, it is projected that one in five boys and one in four girls in Northern Ireland will be obese. This programme was developed by the Giants to help combat child obesity and increase children’s interest in sport and exercise.
