Glen Road masked gang hijacks car from women and then set it on fire

Two women have escaped injury after being forced from their car by a masked gang.

The incident happened on Tuesday night in the Glen Road area of west Belfast.

Three masked men forced a woman in her 30s and a female passenger in her 20s from their car shortly after 9.50pm. The men drove off in the car, which was found later that evening on fire in the Colin Grove area of Poleglass.

Sinn Fein MP Paul Maskey said: "I'm sure it was terrifying for the owners of the car and whoever is carrying it out obviously didn't care about the victims.

"So I would urge anyone with information to come forward as a matter of urgency to ensure that these people are brought in front of the courts."

He added: "It's uncalled for, nobody would like to see it happen to their own family members."

The incident follows an increase in car hijackings in the past few months.

In January a 19-year-old man was stabbed during an attempted hijacking in Belfast.

He was attacked as three young men forced him from his Volkswagen Polo at a car park in Donegall Quay.

The victim suffered a stab would to his forearm and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police have appealed for anyone with information to phone them on 0845 600 8000, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
