Glentoran fan and supporters' club stalwart Roy Millar passes away

Tributes have been paid to well-known Glentoran fan Roy Miller.

Mr Miller, a long-serving member of the Ballymacarrett Glentoran Supporters' Club, passed away peacefully on Friday.

The father-of-three, who was in his 70s, served as chairman of the Ballymac GSC for a number of years in the early 1990.

Mr Miller, who also had six grandchildren, was a lifelong Glentoran fan and an active member of players' benefit committees from the days of Raymond Morrison and George Neill through to the era of Colin Nixon and Paul Leeman.

Also president of the First Newtownards GSC, Roy's hard work was valued by the players.

A post on the Glentoran website said: "It is with great regret and sadness that we confirm the passing of lifelong Glenman and long serving member of the Ballymac GSC, Roy Miller."

Thomas Sewell, Ballymac chairman, said: "Roy was a very close friend, and I was devastated to learn he had passed away. He was very well-liked and very well respected by the past players of Glentoran.

"He was a great member and former chairman of our club. He joined in 1983, when the Ballymac was just a few years old, and was always great on our European trips.

"Roy was still active at all our functions throughout his later years and he will be very sadly missed by everyone at the Ballymac."

In a post on the Glentoran website, the club offered its condolences to Mr Miller's family.

As well has his involvement with football, retired Mr Miller had worked at a Belfast jewellers and been involved with the Boys' Brigade.

His funeral service will be held at St Patrick's Church of Ireland, Ballymacarrett, Belfast, on Friday, February 28 at 11am, followed by committal at Roselawn Cemetery.
