Glentoran supporters bid fond farewell to lifelong fan Maxi Johnston

By Rebecca Black

Generations of Glentoran's most faithful fans joined with the family and friends of Maxi Johnston to bid say goodbye to the leading figure among the club's supporters.

Mr Johnston (81), a long-time member of the Castlereagh Supporters Club and a former chairman, died earlier this week at the age of 81.

Many of the mourners attending his funeral yesterday morning at Co-Operative Funeral Services on the Ravenhill Road in south Belfast wore the colours of Glentoran and the supporters club.

Edward Maxwell Johnston started his work career as a fitter before going to Queen's University at the age of 30 and graduating with a degree in electrical engineering. He then pursued a career in England and Northern Ireland.

As well as a lifelong passion for Glentoran, Mr Johnston was a season ticket holder with Ulster Rugby and a keen golfer who played at Scrabo in Newtownards.

His son Michael said: "My father was a popular and highly intelligent man, and he was well read."

Mr Johnston is survived by his wife Phyllis; sons Michael and Ian; daughter Ivy; his brother John and sister Margaret, both living in Australia.
