Golfer's foundation in huge gift to Mencap

By Staff Reporter

Rory McIlroy's Foundation is to donate up to £250,000 to Mencap NI, a charity that works alongside children and young people with a learning disability.

The huge donation to the Big Step Forward appeal will go towards a new facility in Belfast to give life-changing support to families. A further donation of up to £250,000 has been pledged by the foundation in 2016 - if the same amount can be raised by Mencap NI by the end of this year.

Mencap's Brian Ambrose called the donation a game changer. "Already, the appeal has raised £1.2m in funds, which is great news, but we still need £500,000 to make our dream a reality," he said.

McIlroy said: "When the Rory Foundation was established, initiatives like this one were exactly the type we wanted to get behind. I have no doubt children with a learning disability and their families will benefit from this inspirational project. I'm delighted the Rory Foundation can help Mencap take a really big step forward in making this vision a reality."
