Good Samaritan left unconscious after Newcastle assault

A man is recovering after he was attacked from behind and knocked unconscious moments after intervening in a row.

The 30-year-old victim was attacked after he tried to help a woman he saw arguing with a man close to a mini roundabout in the Bryansford Road area of Newcastle in the early hours of Sunday.

The PSNI said the man was walking along the road at around 1.30am when he saw the argument.

"He intervened and asked the male to leave the female alone," a spokesman said.

"After a brief exchange of words, he left. A short distance away the injured party heard someone running up behind him and he was assaulted by who he believes to be the male involved in the argument.

" The victim suffered injuries to his leg and believes he was knocked unconscious.

"When he came around an unknown taxi driver had come to his assistance," the police spokesman added.

Police have appealed to the taxi driver who assisted the man to contact them and would also ask anyone who may have witnessed the assault or who may have any information to contact them at Newcastle on 0845 600 8000.
