Graeme McDowell names his baby girl, but keeps eye on Ryder Cup

By Amanda Ferguson

Graeme McDowell and wife Kristin have named their new baby daughter Vale Esme.

It comes after the Portush Major-winning golfer faced an excruciating wait to find out if he had made Europe's Ryder Cup team.

World No 1 Rory McIlroy raised eyebrows when he expressed his support for Scottish golfer Stephen Gallacher, who was vying for the last automatic qualifying place, which McDowell secured instead.

"Go on Stevie Gallacher," the Open winner wrote on Twitter.

In an online column McDowell said while he was keeping an eye on the Ryder Cup spot his attention has been focused on supporting his wife and on his new role of father to Vale Esme.

"There's a switch inside me that's flicked and I know things have changed forever," he wrote.

He added: "There was, though, that 1% which led me to flicking on the European Tour app every now and again to see how Stephen Gallacher was getting on in the Italian Open."
