Grandson of former UVF leader Austin in Maze dies

By Staff Reporter

The grandson of a former UVF leader and bomb maker has died.

Daniel Austin passed away suddenly on Sunday. He was the son of Sam and Lizzie, father of Carson and had a number of siblings.

His grandfather, Samuel 'Pinky' Austin - who was at one time leader of the UVF in the Maze prison - died at his Shankill Road home aged 71 last November.

In 1994, Pinky Austin was arrested with UVF associates in a bomb-making factory off the Shankill Road, after information was passed to police by an informer.

The three men were jailed for 10 years after being caught with explosives.

Among those mourning Daniel Austin's death were ex-prisoners group Epic, the West Belfast Athletic and Cultural Society, the Windsor Bar, the First Belfast and Ulster Rangers Supporters Clubs, the Pony Club, and the Loyalist Prisoners and Widows Welfare Association.

His funeral service will be held on Thursday from Agnes Street at 11.15am to Roselawn Cemetery.
