Graveyard vandalism branded 'disgraceful' by SDLP's McCrossan

An SDLP MLA has hit out at the "disgraceful behaviour" of those who vandalised a graveyard in Strabane.

West Tyrone representative Daniel McCrossan called on the public to check the graves of their loved ones at Strabane Cemetery, which is situated near to Townsend Street, and to report any damage.

In the incident, a number of ornaments taken from one of the graves were smashed.

"I’m furious to learn that the grave of loved ones of the McGarrigle family was one of them. This family only lost their mother in recent months," said Mr McCrossan, writing on Facebook.

"We had hoped this would not be the case however from the attached photos you will see that someone or some persons have taken it upon themselves to damage various ornaments and sentimental items belonging to loved ones.

"Causing damage to another's property is wrong but to do so in a place which loved ones hold so dear is particularly concerning and clearly upsetting for family members some of whom we spoke to at the cemetry."

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact the PSNI on the non-emergency number 101, quoting the reference 1550 with the date 27/04/2018, or alternatively to contact independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
