Groom Aidan Johnston the star after wedding song is an internet hit

By Lesley Houston

An Ulster groom's surprise wedding song to his bride has gone viral on the internet after his very own rendition of the classic American Pie "blew everyone away" at the weekend wedding.

Aidan Johnston's speech passed off in regular fashion, but when he picked up an acoustic guitar and began to sing, his new wife Claire Mullan and their assembled guests knew there was going to be no ordinary end to the top-table proceedings.

For the Downpatrick man, normally a bit reticent in public, according to his new wife, strummed and sang a perfectly unique version of the famous Don McLean anthem.

For in its verses and chorus, he chronicled the courtship with his bride, who is from Cookstown, from the very first cold shoulder - when she admitted playing hard to get - to the moment in their love story when he came up with the romantic proposal in Italy.

Before a room packed with family and friends who had gathered from all over the world at the picturesque Farnham Estate in Cavan, Aidan's melody presented a lyrical legacy that his bride will forever cherish.

A proud Claire said her new husband's speech "combined humour, wit and charm with a touch of genius".

"Every single line of the song was directly relevant and true to our relationship," she said.

The new Mrs Johnston, who is now honeymooning in Italy, said she was all the more thrilled by the confidence he exuded with his dramatic gesture.

"He really isn't the gregarious person he appears in the video and he really challenged himself to pluck up the courage and sing it after writing the song last weekend.

"I was completely blown away by it, as were our dumbstruck guests," Claire said.
