Gruesome details of how former UDA leader Johnny Adair carried out his first murder on a young Protestant man with the mental age of a 12-year-old before being trapped by his own ego are among the revelations shared by former RUC officers in a new book.

One detective also tells for the first time of the close bond that developed between him and the family of Paul Gault, who was bludgeoned to death with a hockey stick by his wife’s lover Gordon Graham, a former senior fireman, in a notorious killing in Lisburn.
