Gun found in wheelie bin in Belfast

By Cate McCurry

A gun has been found inside a wheelie bin in west Belfast. Police said the gun was discovered yesterday at a house in Vere Foster Walk.

The property was sealed off yesterday while further searches were carried out.

Children's toys could be seen only yards from the bin.

Army bomb experts were also at the scene.

A PSNI spokesman said: "Police in west Belfast recovered a suspected firearm following a police operation at Vere Foster Walk on Wednesday.

"The firearm was discovered in a bin in the area and has now been taken away for further examination."

The firearm has not been linked to the investigation into the attempted murder of a police officer on Crumlin Road in north Belfast on Sunday night.

The community officer was hit three times in the right arm after up to 10 shots were fired.
