Gun salute in Carrickfergus for Duke of Edinburgh birthday

By Claire Williamson

A 21-gun salute will take place in Mid and East Antrim this June to mark the Duke of Edinburgh's 97th birthday.

The event in honour of His Royal Highness will take place in Carrickfergus.

Three guns, supplied and operated by 206 (Ulster) Battery Royal Artillery, will fire off a total of 21 rounds.

DUP councillor Billy Ashe, who brought the proposal to council, said he was delighted Mid and East Antrim was marking the Duke's birthday in spectacular fashion.

Councillor Ashe said: "This will be a fantastic spectacle in honour of His Royal Highness."

The gun salute will take place on June 11.
