Hammer thug robs Shankill shop

Detectives in west Belfast are investigating after a shop was robbed by a man armed with a hammer.

The incident happened in the Shankill Road area at around 10.55pm on Monday when the robber entered a store and demanded money and cigarettes.

A PSNI spokesman said these were handed over before the man fled on foot.

"The staff member was not injured," he added. The man is described as being around 30 years old, 6ft tall and of stocky build. He was wearing a navy-coloured Puffa jacket and dark-coloured Adidas tracksuit bottoms.

Police are asking anyone who saw a man matching the description in the area or who has information to contact CID in Tennent Street on 0845 600 8000.
