Handbook for clergy on dealing with suicide

By Amanda Ferguson

Clergy across Northern Ireland are to receive a new advice handbook on mental health and suicide to help them assist their flocks.

Copies of Flourish! Sunday Worship Resources are being sent to over 1,400 members of the clergy to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day today. The booklet includes advice on preparing a service, suggestions on scripture and choices for music that could be used during the service. The Rev Mervyn Ewing from the Methodist Church said the booklet will help clergy as they faced the aftermath of suicide.

"Often clergy feel isolated when faced with this issue," he said. "For many clergy, providing pastoral support to families affected by suicide can be very disconcerting and perplexing; this resource provides some very useful and practical advice".
