Hapless copper thieves leave village blacked out

Bungling thieves plunged a Co Down village into darkness after dropping metal onto a live electricity conductor.

Around 1,000 homes in Donaghcloney were left without power for up to three hours when robbers, trying to steal copper tape from a vacant property dropped it onto a live high voltage conductor at about 10pm on Wednesday.

An NIE emergency crew had to be called to the scene to make the situation safe restore electricity supplies. Over half of the affected customers had power restored by 11pm.
